Cause
This issue might happen if the system has previously installed scanner software entries or certain conflicting software’s that are registered by the Windows Installer.
Resolution
Disconnect the USB and power off the scanner
Check the Add/Remove programs for existing entries for HP software. (If certain HP software’s could not be removed from Add/Remove programs, use “WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEANUP UTILITY” or try to remove the program entries from registry location “HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Uninstall”)
Rename the HP and the Hewlett Packard from C:\Program Files to HP_Old and the Hewlett Packard_Old
Open the registry editor and back up the registry
Export HKEY_CLASSES ROOT\INSTALLER as i1 to the desktop and DELETE the key from registry
Export HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer as i2 to the desktop and DELETE the key from the registry
Export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version \Installer as i3 to the desktop and DELETE the key from the registry
Export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett Packard as i4 to the desktop and DELETE the key from the registry
Export HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Installer as i5 to the desktop and DELETE the key from the registry
Delete the entries starting with 03f0 corresponding to the scanner models under the registry location HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Enum/USB.
(also check the same location under HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet001 and CurrentControlSet002)
Rename C:\winnt\twain_32 OR C:\windows\twain_32 as twain_32 old
msconfig -> disable the startup and the non Microsoft services
Reboot the computer and Install the Photo and Imaging software from the CDROM, which came with the scanner.
Upon completion of the setup successfully restart the computer keeping the scanner setup CDROM in.
Import the exported registry backup files i1, i2, i3 and i5 (not the i4) by double clicking the respective files on the desktop. Click YES to confirm.
Plug in the scanner and turn the scanner ON
Check for the scanner in the Device Manager (If the scanner does not show up in the device manager, check for connectivity problems or USB communication problems)
Try to scan using WIA
Try pulling up the Director. (While opening up the Director Error 1706 might pop-up which might keep on showing up in a loop. In that case, END TASK the error message, insert the scanning CDROM and run a REPAIR setup. Restart and try scanning through Director.)
In extreme cases where we see WIA is working but opening up Director or launching HP Scanning Interface is giving problems, try running hpqscnvw.exe OR hpqscnvw from the location C:\Program Files\Hewlett Packard\Digital Imaging\Bin. This would launch hp scanning interface where it shows the same interface which comes up when we hit scan documents or scan pictures. If it opens up the interface try scanning by clicking on New Scan Button and proceed with the rest of the scanning operation. If it is successful, create a desktop shortcut for the hpqscnvw file; rename it to Scan so that the customer can launch the same.
