Here is the list of the five things what Google Glass can do which smart phone can't.
1) Hands free mobility a.k.a. real mobility - With the use of smartphone.. though we are now mobile, agile and can perform many tasks on the move. But we are still sticking to a device that is occupying our hands, ear and continuous thoughts. With Google Glass, we will not have to continuously look at screen to operate it, don't have to use hands or fingers to type, search snap (or take calls in future releases I am sure)..
2) Transparent view - Many apps are available in MarketPlace or App Store with feature of "type while you walk", where we can view the world behind the phone screen while working on the the phone. Google Glass is a clear extension of this idea but as a base feature instead of an add-on app.
3) 3D View - Google Glass or similar product has clear potential to give 3D power without any additional glasses. That's funny, as Google Glass itself is a glass, and can be easily transformed to give the visuals a real 3D look. Who knows if we can even watch Titanic-3D version on these glasses someday. This feature will definitely will take a lead over smartphone that has tried it's hands on 3D experience and failed miserably.
4) Rain Proof - Though many companies tried their hand on making smartphone a wash proof or rain proof, but never saw the day of light or kept their pace with design advancements. I see a real potential in Google Glass that can provide rainproof access to our phone calls and information access.
5) Getting banned in sensitive places - That's the real one threat which can keep Google Glasses on the shelves. That's right, it's not an advantage but disadvantage of Google Glasses. Potentially these glasses are capable of taking images, videos etc without letting others know if you capturing their moments in your glasses. Handling people visiting sensitive areas with glasses-on is going to be another challenge for security agencies. I hope that Google Glasses or similar product will put up an indicator light at least, which glows on for couple of seconds while snapping a pic or glows continuously while making a video. I can't imagine that American Embassy in India would allow the visa aspirants to wear these glasses ;) . On the other hand Smartphone are already matured in this areas, and we anyway come to know easily who is capturing image intentionally and targeting what with the lens.
